You really did it that time,
My heart will never be whole again.
You lost your balance on a tightrope,
I lost my mind trying to save what I could never catch.
Wasn't it easier in our lunchtime laughing days?
When we didn't know each other enough to hurt the way we did.
It was so beautiful when I believed in everything,
And when I believed in you...
But you keep saying 'it's alright,
Just wait and see', oh
Your words mean nothing to me, oh.
Who you are is all that you've been,
You're not an innocent.
You're not an innocent.
There's still some things I can't speak of,
Sometimes I live all the hell again.
I'm not so shattered as I was now,
But that's not what I could say back then.
Wasn't it easier when love didn't get in the way?
When it was so out of reach it didn't mean anything to you.
I was so blinded when I was trying to be your everything,
I guess the monsters caught up to me.
And they keep saying 'it's alright,
Just wait and see', oh,
Those words mean nothing to me, oh
Who you are is all that you've been,
You're not an innocent.
It's not okay,
You really let me down,
I'm only a child,
I'm still growing up now.
I'm who I am because you made me see,
You're not an innocent.
Time turns flames to embers,
But I'll always remember,
That the one who messed up was you.
Lives change like the weather,
I hope you won't let others suffer,
Today is never too late to be brand new.
So now I say 'It's alright,
Just wait and see', oh
'Cause now you mean nothing to me, oh
Who you are is all that you've been,
You're not an innocent.
It's not okay,
You really let me down,
I'm only a child,
I'm still growing up now.
I'm who I am because you made me see,
You're not an innocent.
You lost your balance on a tightrope, oh.
But now it's too late to get me back.

"You're not an innocent" is a powerful line, and it hooks up the whole poem.
"I lost my mind trying to save what I could never catch." This is a great line. And it could well break up in several ways. "I lost my mind/Trying to save/What I could never catch" or "I lost my mind trying/to save/what I could never catch".
"When we didn't know each other enough to hurt the way we did." Poignant!
"I was so blinded when I was trying to be your everything,
I guess the monsters caught up to me." In fact that whole verse is great. The "blindedness" and the "monsters" contrast with the "everything".
And I like the change to "I live all the hell again".
When I first read your version of Innocent, my attention was quite naturally on the "shattered" aspect and how it built up in the form.
Swift's vocals and lyrics really show her country heritage and influence, rather more than some of the others (like Love Story and the one where she talked about the house back in June/July/August).
There's an article which reveals where she spent the last two years homeschooled. It was under the Aaron Academy.
Love your non-starry eyed perspective! And it's true, isn't it, for all of us. Where we are is where we've been.
(My favourite line of Swift's is probably the "Lights in the street still shine". And the "firefly days" give something to think about, as does the next one about "someone bigger").
The lyric I was thinking of was in fact on your blog on the 1st September, and it was called Mine.
As a reminder: the video "Mine" by Taylor Swift. And that line "You made a rebel out of a careless man's careful daughter" is priceless
